5 years ago, my daughter caught pneumonia, which quickly turned into a pleural effusion, which resulted in a two week stay in pediatric icu with a chest drain and feeding tube. It was a very scary, emotional, exhausting time. My husband and I were fortunate to stay in the Ronald McDonald house on the hospital campus, and every day he would go home for a few hrs to eat dinner with our two other children, who were staying with family. I couldn't bring myself to leave my daughter until we knew she was being discharged in the next 12 hrs- I was so worried and hated how she cried for me (she was 6 and very scared). I hadn't left the building for more than two weeks. So knowing she was headed home, I decided I could run to Walmart close by and grab a few things before heading home. She lost 14 lbs in three weeks- a HUGE amount for a 40 lb 6 year old- and so my cart held only applesauce and a pack of new underwear for her since everything was falling off her and she still couldn't keep solids down. I was so exhausted and scatterbrained I couldn't think of anything else to buy. I know I looked quite disheveled in my pjs and wild hair and baggy eyes. The cashier asked me how my day was going and all I could choke out was "my daughter gets to come home from the hospital today." Before I burst into tears. She came around the till and held me, patting my back, then held my hands and asked my daughters name and what she was in the hospital for. To my surprise she pulled a little note book out of her register and wrote my daughters name and age and condition down on a list- she said it was her prayer list and she was adding my daughters recovery to her prayers tonight. I'm not an especially religious person, but her kindness and love and empathy touched me in a way I have never been able to forget. A few months later when my daughter was with me at the store, we happened to come thru her line again. She saw me and came around the till again, as my daughter walked up. In High School I had a super tough time. I remember one day I was contemplating suicide for various reasons as I was sitting at a table waiting for the first bell to ring. The group of friends who were honestly more like acquaintances were standing nearby. One of the guys who I secretly had a crush on looked over at me and simply said, "hey beautiful". After about 13 years of an off and on friendship with him we started dating. We've now been married for a little over a year and have an amazing baby girl together.

I work for a hotel and had some guests come in for a family reunion. The oldest was maybe in her 80s and was very frail. She asked for help carrying her oxygen tank to her room and I was happy to oblige. I also helped her get her bed more comfortable and made sure she had enough pillows and blankets and such. Her family left me this note along with a $50 tip! I was so surprised they tipped, as what I did was not a problem at all. My manager was also very surprised that he framed their note for everyone to take example. I wrote them a letter thanking them and they followed that up with a call. It's one of my most cherished moments in my life.

I didn't have the greatest family growing up. But one thing we did used to do growing up was go to the water park. And I was left alone around 7 years old and left on the deep end. And I started drowning but the lifeguards at the place sucks. So a stranger, grabbed my arm asked me where's my family and he must have gathered things weren't great. So he taught me how to swim that day. If somehow, he was reading this I'd love to let him know how grateful I was.

One time on the bus ride home from college I was reading an article I found on Facebook that had the word ‘Suicide’ on the headline. This nice old lady have apparently been looking at my phone because the word ‘Suicide’ caught her attention. When I looked up, she immediately asked if I was okay. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude by looking at your phone but the word suicide on there have just been staring back at me. First of all, you didn’t get that from someone else, right? Someone didn’t tell you to, you know, do that?” she asked, genuinely worried. I smiled and told her it was just an article I came across, and that I was completely fine. She breathed a sigh of relief and said, “Oh Thank God. People can be so mean and inconsiderate these days with their internet and the anonymity it allows.” We continued to talk until we got to our stop and went our separate ways. It might not have been a compliment, but it was heartwarming to see that someone I’d never met (and probably will never meet again) actually cared about my wellbeing.

I was shopping for jeans one day and I was having no luck. Every pair I tried on looked awful on me and made me feel worse about my body. I decided to try one last store and the sales lady came up and asked me how I was. I told her that I felt awful and fat because everything looked good on the mannequins but not on me. After 2 hours of her helping me, I left the store with 3 pairs of beautiful jeans and renewed self confidence. Later at home, I found a note in the pocket of one of the jeans: "you're more beautiful than any mannequin". This happened about 6 years ago but her kindness has stuck with me ever since. If she's reading this: thank you so much!

I used to work at a cancer hospital on the pediatric floor and most of the time the patients were end-stage so they would be admitted for long periods of time, so it was easy to get close with them. One morning when I came into work I heard the sound of an IV pole rolling my way. I looked over my desk to see one of my favorites in his little gown looking up at me with a shy look on his face and he handed me a sticker for my ID badge (we usually wore fun stickers on our badges that the kids would give us). I looked at the sticker and it was a princess Jasmine sticker and he whispered "I know your secret." I was like what secret? And he goes "you're her." (I have dark hair and dark features but I'm def no princess Jasmine!) I didn't have the heart to let him down so I gave him a wink and told him to keep it our little secret.

I was talking on the phone in a Subway to my friend about how I was going to come out to my family. A woman came over to me, and said, "excuse me, I couldn't help but overhear. You seem like a lovely girl. Your family should love you no matter what. Take it from a parent, as long as your kids are happy, we'll be happy." She patted my shoulder and said, "I wish you the best of luck." I've never forgotten that day, and I cry thinking about it. :)

I have an unusual name. Anyone who can identify with that understands that people saying your name wrong comes with the territory. After 27 years of having my name mispronounced I had stopped correcting people for their expense and mine. Until one day I had a meeting at work with a woman in corporate, who was a higher up. She attempted to say my name and of course, didn't succeed. I told her, "Close enough," then laughed and expected her to move on to someone else. But instead she stopped, looked me in the dead in the eyes and said, "Your name is the first gift your parents gave you besides the gift of life. It's important and I want to get it right. How do you pronounce your name?" I was taken aback and said, "Kenisha. Ken-ish-uh." No one had ever seriously attempted to get my name right and for once someone decided that it, indeed, mattered. 
From that point on I make sure people take the time to pronounce my name correctly. My name isn't an inconvenience. It's a gift that I now take pride in sharing with others.

One night in college, I went to the local dive bar with one of my friends as we had done dozens of times before. It was moderately crowded when we got there, but that was to be expected on a Saturday night. But the place just kept filling up with people. Tall, drunk, loud people. It was the kind of crowded where you can't hear from the noise, can't see over the heads of anyone, and can't take one single step. I was stuck in the middle of the room in a mob of dudes and was being pushed simultaneously forward and backward as people kept filling the space. It was at this point that I'm starting to have a panic attack but trying my hardest not to look panicked. Suddenly a guy in a plaid button down shirt appears in front of me and looks straight into my eyes and nods. He held his hand out (as best as anyone could do in the situation) and nodded again with a sweet little smile. I took his hand and he started maneuvering a path for me towards the back door to the porch. He continues to clear a path for me and finally gets me to the door where there's nothing but an empty porch with a few people. At the doorway, he leans in and whispers "Now you can be free", lets go of my hand, winks, and disappears back in to the crowd of people. 

This was over 8 years ago and I still think about this moment when a stranger truly saw me when I felt invisible. I can't remember his face very well, but that plaid shirt and little smile are etched in my memory permanently.

Let's be real, the world is a pretty shitty place at the moment.

But even though things aren't the greatest, people can still come through and really surprise you.

Maybe a stranger let you know just how much they appreciated you while you served them at work.

Perhaps someone saw you out with your child and let you know how much of a good parent you are.

Or maybe it was as simple as a random woman complimenting you on how bomb your makeup looked.
