They say the older you get, the fewer f*cks you give. And while I'm only a fresh 30-year-old, I can already see how different I am from my 20-year-old self. — with entirely new stressors, priorities, and qualms than the decade before. As I step into this new era of life, I couldn't help but wonder what other people have started to find more and more pointless with age.
So obviously, I turned to Reddit to see what people are saying about getting older. I found tons of folks sharing the things they've started to see as pointless, dumb, or just plain useless with age, and I couldn't resist writing them down. So take a look and let me know if you agree...or what I'm missing.
1. "Dating used to be so different when we were younger. But now, 90% of dating is done through dating apps or Snapchat. I want cheesy, gooey, accidental love."
2. "The older you get, the less exciting social media is. The algorithms are wired in a dirty way to hold your attention, and most of the content is pure brain rot with no point or meaning to be learned from."
3. "The older I get, the more I realize how fragile our systems are. Growing up, I thought they were rock solid. But Everything from our monetary and banking systems to housing is all corrupt. It's not the American dream anymore. Now it's a nightmare. We have 90-year-olds still working at Walmart to make ends meet."
4. "Probably how everything slowly turns into a subscription or a side hustle. When I was younger, it felt like you could just enjoy stuff. Now it's like: hobbies, monetize it; hanging out, network; rest, 'You should be more productive.'"
5. "In my day, an affair ended political careers. Now?"
"Politicians have figured out that if they just don't resign, then they face zero consequences."
6. "Now, I hate the new headlights on vehicles. I was already complaining about these when I was 19. Now I'm 30, and they're even worse. They are not safe and need to be banned!"
"There's a special place in hell waiting for the auto execs who thought that super bright LED headlights were a great safety feature."
7. "Getting older has made me quietly hate crowded places. I used to thrive in them. Now, I just want to leave after ten minutes."
8. "Unreliable people really grate on me the older I get. I didn’t care as a teen if people were flaky, but now..."
"I don’t make plans with people often, but when I do, it would take an actual real emergency for me to back out at the last minute. Drives me crazy when people clearly don’t have the same level of respect for me."
"I have so many girlfriends who live in my area, and I wish I could just call them and go for an evening walk, like when we were kids and used to ride our bicycles around after school. But now, everyone is so flaky and performatively busy."
9. "The older I get, the more I realize how many people are fake and shallow, yet still act like you are beneath them."
10. "All these subscriptions and apps for everything. And having to have a profile to check out. Like no! Just take my money and send me my sh*t."
11. "When you get older, you start to dislike how loud and performative people are online. It feels like everyone's either flexing, selling something, or pretending they've got life figured out. It makes it hard to tell what's actually worth caring about versus what's just trending that week."
12. "I never liked noise, even when I was younger, but I'm getting even more grumpy about it in my old age. There's music everywhere. People are playing videos on their phones in public. Televisions are always on in the background. Whyyyyyyy? What's wrong with a little quiet?"
13. "It annoys me when coworkers don't want to work anymore. Why the f*ck did you apply for the show if you intended on showing up late, missing shifts, and barely doing anything when you are there? It didn't bother me in my 20s. I'm not sure when the switch flipped."
14. "When you get older, you realize how much you waste time on things that don't really matter. I've started appreciating simple moments and people who make life feel lighter."
15. "I used to fear a boring life. Now? I don’t make much money, but I've made a wonderful home with my beautiful lady. We have mostly boring days, then after work, we spend our nights snuggling, watching TV, or playing games. I wouldn't change anything for a 'thrilling' life. There's beauty in the mundane."
16. "When you age, you find out how corrupt things are. I miss the good old days when I didn't know how horrible people were."
17. "I've noticed as I get older that people just need to shut up. They talk too much about their opinions or viewpoints on everything."
18. "I've started to realize that a lot of my unhappiness as an adult is rooted in just being way overwhelmed by sensory stuff. Fluorescent lights are too much, and they're everywhere. Headlights are too bright, too. Everything is too loud. Crowds are extremely overwhelming. I literally only wear comfortable clothing now because it puts me in a bad mood if I don't. In a weird way, I feel like I'm regressing into being like, five, again."
19. "The whole alcohol culture pisses me off. If I don't want to drink, so don't give me sh*t about it."
