The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler. Two siblings run away from home to stay in a museum, the Met, I think? It's old, so they survive by bathing in the fountain at night and collecting the coins, then using them at the lunch counter in the museum. Then a mysterious, unauthenticated statue is donated by a rich widow. The kids try to solve its lineage, and end their adventure at the widows house where she gives them time to go through her files and find the authentication papers themselves (if they can). It was already outdated when I read it, but it was such fun reading at elementary age, when it wasn't so impossible to imagine.

The Secret of Nimh. It's not unknown by any means but I've never come across anyone who read it! 

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is another Newberry that no one I know has read. It’s about a family living in Mississippi in the 1930s during a hot and dangerous summer. 

Coffee Will Make You Black is also fantastic. A girl growing up in Chicago transitions into womanhood in this one. It covers periods, colorism, racism, sex, feminism, and feeling outclassed (even when you shouldn’t).

Also Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type 🐄 ⌨️

A hilarious book about cows, who somehow have a typewriter, keep writing notes to Farmer Brown requesting various thing like electric blankets and such, much to his annoyance. The story has a great rhythm to it so it's very fun to read with kids (and adults tbh).

The Sisters Grimm: Two sisters, Sabrina and Daphne, go live with their estranged grandmother after their parents disappear and they find out they are descendants of the Brothers Grimm. I read this series when I was 10.

Mademoiselle Charlotte: A French series about a wacky substitute teacher. She has a blue dress and wide sun hat. My class read this in grade 3 (I was in French Immersion). I don't remember a lot but it's very funny.

Flying Solo: After a class (I think grade 5 or 6) finds out they don't have a substitute teacher they tries to get through the day on their own. Some chapters start at the beginning of the day at the homes of different students.
Including:
- A boy (I can't remember his name) whose father is in the army and their family is being uprooted to Hawaii. The problem is they just got a puppy and he has to decide what to do because of quarantine laws in Hawaii.
- A girl, Rachel White, who loves planes. She has been mute since the death of one of her classmates.
